Automated EEG analysis of epilepsy: A review
نویسندگان
چکیده
Epilepsy is an electrophysiological disorder of the brain, characterized by recurrent seizures. Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a test that measures and records the electrical activity of the brain, and is widely used in the detection and analysis of epileptic seizures. However, it is often difficult to identify subtle but critical changes in the EEG waveform by visual inspection, thus opening up a vast research area for biomedical engineers to develop and implement several intelligent algorithms for the identification of such subtle changes. Moreover, the EEG signals are nonlinear and non-stationary in nature, which contribute to further complexities related to their manual interpretation and detection of normal and abnormal (interictal and ictal) activities. Hence, it is necessary to develop a Computer Aided Diagnostic (CAD) system to automatically identify the normal and abnormal activities using minimum number of highly discriminating features in classifiers. It has been found that nonlinear features are able to capture the complex physiological phenomena such as abrupt transitions and chaotic behavior in the EEG signals. In this review, we discuss various feature extraction methods and the results of different automated epilepsy stage detection techniques in detail. We also briefly present the various open ended challenges that need to be addressed before a CAD based epilepsy detection system can be set-up in a clinical setting. 2013 Elsevier B.V. Background: Epilepsy is a severe disorder of the central nervous system that predisposes the person to recurrent seizures. Fifty million people worldwide suffer from epilepsy; after Alzheimer’s and stroke, it is the third widespread nervous disorder. Objective: In this paper, an algorithm to detect the onset of epileptic seizures based on the analysis of brain electrical signals (EEG) has b...
متن کاملA Novel Method for Detection of Epilepsy in Short and Noisy EEG Signals Using Ordinal Pattern Analysis
Introduction: In this paper, a novel complexity measure is proposed to detect dynamical changes in nonlinear systems using ordinal pattern analysis of time series data taken from the system. Epilepsy is considered as a dynamical change in nonlinear and complex brain system. The ability of the proposed measure for characterizing the normal and epileptic EEG signals when the signal is short or is...
متن کاملA review of developments of EEG-based automatic medical support systems for epilepsy diagnosis and seizure detection
Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders-approximately one in every 100 people worldwide are suffering from it. The electroencephalogram (EEG) is the most common source of information used to monitor, diagnose and manage neurological disorders related to epilepsy. Large amounts of data are produced by EEG monitoring devices, and analysis by visual inspection of long recordings ...

Background: Regarding the complications of chronic intractable epilepsy, the presence of respectable lesions in many these patients that can be diagnosed with noninvasive sensitive techniques such as MRI and SPECT and the unrecognized significance of epilepsy surgery in our country, we have decided to review the management of medically intractable epilepsy in patients, who underwent epilepsy su...
متن کاملAutomated Feature Extraction of Epileptic Seizures Using Wavelet Decomposition of EEG and Approximate Entropy
The disease epilepsy is characterized by a sudden and recurrent malfunction of the brain that is termed seizer. The electroencephogram (EEG) has a lot of information about brain and also used in several automated epilepsy detection systems. In this study, the wavelet subband decomposition and Approximate Entropy (ApEn) is used for epilepsy detection from EEG signals. In first stage, EEG signals...
